This band formerly released the album 'Dreamscapes' under the name Elysium. Whereas the previous album consisted of high quality atmospheric doomdeath, this time around the main word would be "variety". In general, Stone Wings continues writing very atmospheric music, but next to the brick-heavy doom laden tracks, also some more uptempo songs with a more gothic/blackish feel to them are present. Stone Wings kept their strong points, but have improved significantly on other points. The guitar work and the rough grunts of vocalist Jamie are still top notch, but the drum sound has taken a huge leap forward. Keyboard parts still support the other instruments in the more atmospheric parts, but in comparison to the last one, this album is more guitar-oriented.

I was at my local CD store the other day frantically searching for some new music. As I was going through the cheap section, I found this album for $1. Yep, that's right, $1. The album had probably been sitting there for ages. The album cover looked cool so I thought 'Why not?’ After listening to this album, I'm going to pick up every CD that's $1, because this album is fantastic. First off, this album is pretty generic doom metal, but has a couple of nice little tweaks of it's own. There's a lot of synth, a lot of female vocals and a lot of spoken vocals amongst the growls. Since this band is Australian, the spoken vocals and female vocals are quite different to what you would normally hear, due to their accent, which at first sounds quite odd, but you get used to it. The lyrics are quite good too, centering on despair, grief etc.

По интенсивности напора и уровню динамики композиций "Temple Of Guilt" напомнил мне скоропостижно развалившихся Aphotic с их гениальным "To Find New Darkness".

The Walking Dead is an EP by Saint Vitus released in 1985 by SST Records. This is the final release to feature original singer Scott Reagers until their final album, Die Healing (1995). This EP was released on 12" vinyl but has never been officially re-released on CD.
The third album of this enigmatic band combines the conceptions laid in their previous albums: exalted lightness of «Ea Taesse» and severe darkness of «II». Unique atmosphere of Ea fuses epic funeral doom with atmospheric ambient adding touch of classical music to the work’s canvas. Melancholic piano, beautiful guitar solos and choirs create a monumental memorial to ancient civilizations bringing their echoes in enchanting Ea music. The epilogue of Ea trilogy is the start of the path to the roots of the World.

Recently released on Game Two Records, the sludgy, heavy, slow to mid tempo'd, bark oriented sound of Cold Mourning has released "Lower Than Low", a dark trip into the doom metal sound. With a pitched, tell it like it is type of pissed off vocal style from guitarist / vocalist Mat, Cold Mourning takes some complex song structures mixed with some talented soloing to produce a solid effort of pure metal. The production of this disc works on a professional level as well, allowing each of the tones to come through about as clean as they are going to be heard with this sludgy sound.

This is one of my favorite albums from the early 70's, and until now, just about impossible to find with decent sound quality. It's great to see a proper re-issue coming out. I would highly recommend it to any fan of the early 70's sound. There are a few nice heavy downer rock tracks if you enjoy that kind of thing...

Life sure ain't fair. It's a fact that you've no doubt figured out, and one of which Aphotic is acutely fucking aware. The Wisconsin act recently called it quits after five long years of footing the bill for their numerous releases and trying in vain to land the record deal that should have been imminent. What's worse is that this band grew from the demise of Dusk, another well regarded doom band who also struggled for years to get a label deal and finally packed it in. And in a time when we so frequently shake our heads at bands that land deals despite being blatantly devoid of anything even remotely interesting, the demise of a very good band like Aphotic despite their dedication and best efforts, is a nasty reminder of what we already know: sometimes, life just ain't fair.
You might wonder if the favorable review for Failure doesn't reflect a deification of this band based on my perspective on their demise, but a look at our reviews of previous releases shows that this EP received the same score as the one I gave Stillness Grows (a collection of their first three EPs), and Erik Thomas gave their split with Dusk. More importantly, it shows the consistency throughout the band’s career and five EPs. Aphotic was never going to be my favorite band, but while I'm disappointed that fellow doomsters YOB recently decided to part ways, it's equally frustrating that a consistently enjoyable band couldn't find enough opportunity to be able to continue...
